It's that time again for JTB Hawaii's Honolulu Festival!  This year they are celebrating its 14th anniversary.  The majority of the events happened at the Hawaii Convention Center but there were other areas where the groups performed.  I was lucky to catch a few performances at the Waikiki Shopping Plaza.  It was a small stage but the performances were very entertaining!

The first picture shows a group that performed the Shamisen.  I really like the sound of the Shamisen and it is amazing how many different sounds yuo can get just from three strings.  Although there were chairs set up for the audience, the crowd was so big that people were standing as well as sitting in the front row of the chairs.

There were also many Hula Halau groups that came from Japan.  The art of hula has been embraced by the Japanese people and it is nice to see them so enthusiastic about performing in front of a crowd in Hawaii.  This group in particular did a very good job in their hula performance.  There were groups that performed the Yosakoi, energetic women dancing to popular music, dressed in bright and attractive clothing holding a noise maker called the Naruko.

This group came from Aomori Prefecture and it is in their area where they have the Nebuta Festival.  They are the ones that cheer on the Nebuta to keep moving forward.  If you have seen the Nebuta, it is a very large float so it is pretty important to have these musicians!

The part of any festival that I love the most are the taiko drums!  This group were actually high school students and they had everyone in the audience joining in with their drumming and energetic personalities.  When they were done with their performance, it was as though they were famous people with everyone wanting to take a photo with the entire group.

Hawaii no Omatsuri mo tanoshii desu!
