Sunday, February 3, 2008 marked the 42nd Super Bowl of the NFL. Every year, we usually gather with my Super Bowl gang for a large barbeque and where the game is projected onto a large screen under a garage with tents, tables and chairs. This year, due to unforeseen circumstances, the Super Bowl gang ended up at separate parties. My wife and I went to Mililani to hang out with a friend. The menu was fairly simple, Zippy's chili, hot dogs, rice, roast beef, brownies, jello shots, haupia, chips, chopped onions and shredded cheese. Of course, the cheese and onions were great toppings for the chili dogs and we even tried making simple nachos with the chips.
Here is one of our friends who wanted to imitate a Center or was it a Wide Receiver? Anyway, this year, there was major hype about the New England Patriots with their no-loss record for a perfect season. If they win the Super Bowl, it would make for an ultimate perfect season. There was only one team that had an ultimate perfect season by winning the Super Bowl and it was the Miami Dolphins in 1972. The start of the game was very slow with the Giants scoring a field goal 10 minutes into the game. Then in the 2nd quarter, the Patriots scored a touchdown making it 3-7. Still not much excitement except for the interception by the Patriots right after this touchdown but they did not score again. The halftime show featured Tom Petty and there were the "Super Bowl Commercials" which can be viewed at www.myspace.com/superbowlads or http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7747698/Super-Bowl-XLII-Commercials
In the 3rd quarter, there was still no action besides a major penalty against the Giants for having 12 men on the field. Now, the action was all focused into the last quarter. Only a few minutes into the 4th quarter, the Giants makes a touchdown and it is 10-7. The game continues feverishly and with only less than 3 minutes left in the game, the Patriots score a touchdown and it is now 10-14. There was still a lot of time left and the Giants capitalized with a big play with only less than a minute left in the game. TOUCHDOWN! Oh my goodness, the score is now 17-14 and the New York Giants may win this with only 39 seconds left in the game! Tom Brady of the Patriots tries for a few long passes but comes short. With only 1 second left in the game, everyone is celebrating the win for the Giants but NFL rules state that they must fully complete the game. It took awhile before the ball was hiked and Eli Manning kneeled for the official end of Super Bowl 42.
It was unfortunate that the New England Patriots did not have their ultimate perfect season but they did record a perfect season. They have become one of two teams alongside the Miami Dolphins in 1972 to record a perfect season.
Congratulations to both teams for a job well done.
