HAPPY NEW YEAR ! !

Wow!  It is already 2008!  SUGOI!  I have a good feeling that this year is going to be another great year.  On New Year's Eve, we spent time with my wife's older sister and her family.  We had dinner, played with fireworks, saw the firework show at the stroke of midnight and ate soba, they actually called it Toshi Koshi Soba.  I think it is supposed to prepare you for the New Year so that only good things happen.  

This year, since I wanted to make sure that it was going to be a good year, my wife and I decided to go to Hatsumoude.  It was New Year's Day and our first visit to the shrine together.  My mother came along since we were already going and we all went to the Izumo Taisha in Downtown.  As you can see in this picture, there was the hand washing area.  Actually, I was told that this area was for cleasing oneself before entering the shrine.  I think I remember going to a shrine in Japan and actually drinking this water.  There was also a lady handing out some sake.  Is this also for cleasing oneself?  I think I will need more than a sip!

After going up the stairs, making a monetary contribution, and tugging the rope to shake the bell above, a priest waved a long stick with white streams of paper on the end over our heads to bless us for the New Year.  We then approached the area with numerous charms for purchase.  We bought the Kanai Anzen, Safety of the Home, Kotsuu Anzen, Safety in Traffic, Shoubai Hanjyou, Successful Business, and Anzan, for safe preganancy and delivery.

Before going to Hatsumoude, my wife and I went to my parent's house to eat Ozouni, mochi soup and Osechi, boxed delicacies for the New Year.  Now I know for sure that 2008 will be a great year! 

Kotoshi mo Douzo Yoroshiku Onegai Shimasu!
